Your pet dogs sleep is affected greatly by its age, health, and breed. A newborn pup can sleep most of the day and night, with breaks for eating and sleeping and play as they get to be older puppies. Weeks old, these puppies sleep an average of 15 hours, adding play and romping in their wakeful activities.

As a pet dog grows older, its sleep may be disturbed by pain or sleep disorders. On the other hand, some dogs experience normal sleep pattern all through adulthood and feel changes due to old age and ailments that come with getting older.

Pet dogs have regular sleep patterns, which is the same for humans and animals alike. As they lie down and breathe deeply they go to the Slow Wave Sleep (SWS) phase. SWS is shallow sleep, pet dogs seemingly asleep may give a start at the littlest unfamiliar sound it hears. This phase primes the body for relaxation, yet the brain is still on default active mode. Depending on the dog, transition to Rapid eye Movement phase may take from minutes or more. This phase is characterized by the movement of the eyeballs under the eyelid coupled with nose twitching or slight leg jerks.

Pets that use dog beds have an easier transition to REM, the reason having to be its comfortable state when it sinks down on the soft and firm center cushion or ortho surface. Pet dogs with proper sleep patterns display a good demeanor and temper when they wake. Unless they wake by themselves and not bothered by nudges during REM, they'd be fine (disturbing REM results to a dog biting the one bothering it).

Dog sleep positions also play a part in a dogs quality of sleep. A sleeping pet that likes to curl or sprawl are indications of its mental well being which affect their body and restfulness.
